TUFFSHOT TRIAL: 002 — Competitor Field Guide
This event simulates the physical and mental demands of a backcountry hunt. Competitors will move under load, manage fatigue, and execute shots under pressure. Total exertion will cover roughly 5 miles of movement across varied terrain.
Final course details and pack weights will be confirmed by email prior to the event.
Event Format
The competition is divided into three phases. Each phase includes a shot sequence that determines either time delay or physical penalties.
Scoring is based on total time to completion of all 3 phases.
phase 1 — Pack In
Simulates hiking into hunting country while managing shot opportunities along the way.
Approx. 2–3 miles of movement
Pack weight: based on division
Field shooting scenarios throughout course
Poor shot placement results in immediate physical penalties before continuing
Focus: steady pacing, shooting while winded, composure during effort
Phase 2 — Pursuit
Simulates closing distance on an animal under pressure.
Conducted in controlled heats.
Includes repeated cycles of:
Short intense movement
Functional physical challenges
Immediate shot execution
Examples of movements may include:
Burpees
Box overs
Sandbag lifts
Carries
Short sprints
Drag or pull work
Focus: heart rate control and rapid shot recovery
Phase 3 — Pack Out
Simulates the work after the shot.
Approx. 1–1.5 miles
Heavy pack carry: weight based on division
Continuous movement, no shooting
Focus: grit, durability, and sustained output

Minimum 6 arrows (more recommended)

Pack
Framed hunting pack capable of carrying weight securely
Competitor must supply pack weight for Pack In
Pack Out weight will be supplied by event staff
Clothing & Personal
Footwear suitable for uneven terrain
Weather-appropriate clothing
Food and hydration for a full day outdoors

All shooting occurs on designated ranges and lanes
Mandatory safety briefing before start

Divisions
Men’s open (18- 54): Stage 1 weight 40 lbs. Stage 3 weight 60 lbs.
Women’s open: Stage 1 weight 25 lbs. Stage 3 weight 45 lbs.
Men’s Masters (55 and over): Stage 1 weight 30 lbs. Stage 3 weight 50 lbs.
